“I needed to talk to someone but didn’t know where to start. I didn’t have the money for a therapist and getting seen elsewhere was going to take weeks. A friend pointed me to a free mental health service through Tend. There was no wait time, I could get seen straight away. The whole process was straightforward and easy. I can’t believe it’s FREE!”

Frequently asked questions

Who will I talk to?
You will talk to a Health Improvement Practitioner. They are qualified mental health clinicians.
What is a mental health clinician?
A mental health clinician is a broad term that covers a range of trained health professionals such as a psychologist, counsellor, mental health nurse and social worker. They support your mental and emotional wellbeing by listening, talking things through and helping you create an action plan for you to feel better.

Our team of mental health professionals include mental health nurses, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, alcohol and drug counsellors and health improvement practitioners.
What is a Health Improvement Practitioner?
A Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP) is a registered mental health professional who works within general practice to provide immediate, practical support for mental health and well-being. In New Zealand, HIPs are trained to offer brief, evidence-based interventions for a wide range of concerns, including stress, anxiety, low mood, sleep difficulties, and lifestyle changes.

At Tend, our HIPs are part of the care team and their services are free for all patients. They work closely with doctors, nurses and health coaches to support your overall well-being.

Sessions with a HIP are 30 minutes and focused on practical strategies you can apply immediately. Whether you need support for mental health challenges or help making positive lifestyle changes, our HIPs provide a welcoming, stigma-free space to help you take control of your health.
How long is the appointment?
Free video consultations with a Health Improvement Practitioner are 30 minutes and focused on practical strategies you can apply immediately.
Is mental health support at Tend free?
Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP) consultations are completely free for both enrolled and casual patients. Health Coach sessions are free for enrolled patients. GP/NP mental health appointments have standard consultation fees.
How many times can I see the clinician?
These appointments are designed as a brief intervention. Most people find just one session helps them move forward with confidence. At the appointment, you and your practitioner can address your immediate needs and decide on any further steps.
Can I get mental health support if I'm not enrolled with Tend?
Yes. Anyone over 16 can access free 30 minute online mental health consultations with a mental health clinician.
What's the difference between a Health Improvement Practitioner and a GP for mental health?
HIPs provide free mental health support for anxiety, stress, depression, sleep issues, and lifestyle challenges. They cannot prescribe medication. GPs can provide full mental health assessments, prescribe medication, create treatment plans and make specialist referrals.
Can the Health Improvement Practitioner prescribe medication?
No they can not prescribe medication. If you need medication, you will need to book an appointment with a GP or Nurse Practitioner.
Is this service private, secure and confidential?
Yes it's private, secure and confidential. We treat your information with the utmost care and follow strict privacy laws including the Privacy Act 2020 and Health Information Privacy Code 2020. Read our privacy policy.
Who is eligible for this service?
You need to be a NZ resident eligible for public health services in NZ. You do not need to be enrolled with Tend and do not need a GP referral. This service is not available to those on a working visa.
What do I need to prepare for the appointment?
You just need a phone, with wi-fi connection. Make sure you take the video-call in a safe quiet space.
