How to attend your online doctor's appointment

1. Get ready

Find a quiet, private space before your appointment time with a reliable internet connection.

2. Checking in

App: Tap 'Check in' when you get the reminder notification. Keep notifications on and switch off Do Not Disturb or Sleep Mode so you don’t miss the call.

Your booking window becomes a virtual waiting room. Join early to test your camera and mic.

3. Join the video call

Your clinician will start the video call when they're ready.

4. Chat to your clinician

Your GP or NP will talk with you over a secure video-call.

5. Get your care plan

After your appointment, your notes will be available in your Tend account. If you've been prescribed medication, it'll go straight to your preferred pharmacy for easy pick-up. You can save a preferred pharmacy in the Tend app, or just let your clinician know which pharmacy to use during your consultation.

How to pay for your Online Now appointment

Payment is made via credit or debit card. Your card details are securely added during sign up or when booking your appointment. Rest assured, you will only be charged once your appointment has been completed. 

What can and can't be prescribed in an online GP appointment?

Our clinicians can prescribe many medications, if required. There may be some circumstances when we are unable to provide a prescription due to New Zealand medication regulations. The issuing of prescriptions is at the discretion of the doctor.

If you are prescribed medication, we will send the prescription to your pharmacy of choice for collection.

Short term medication
The clinician may decide you need a short course of medication for your condition.
Long term medication
For ongoing medication, see your regular doctor so they can monitor your health over time. If you are enrolled with Tend, we will have your health history on file and our team will be able to help.

Controlled medications
Strong painkillers, sedatives and stimulants require close monitoring by your regular GP. Our online clinicians cannot prescribe these to patients.

Can an online doctor write a prescription in NZ?
Yes. Tend's online doctors can prescribe many medications during your Online Now consultation including antibiotics, contraception, and short-term medications for one-off conditions.

The prescription is sent to your chosen pharmacy for collection. The issuing of prescriptions is at the discretion of the prescriber. Controlled medications such as strong painkillers and sedatives cannot be prescribed online.

How much does an online doctor cost in NZ?
With Tend, casual patients pay $79.95 for an Online Now consultation (18+ without CSC).

Enrolled Tend patients pay their enrolled clinic fee.

With a Community Services Card: $33 (18+) or $30 (14–17). Children under 14 with CSC are free at all times.

A $10 after-hours surcharge applies between 10pm and 8am and on public holidays.
Do I need to download an app to see an online doctor with Tend?
No. Online Now appointments can be booked through the Tend app (iOS and Android) or via the web portal. The app lets you save pharmacy preferences, view test results and book additional appointments and services. 
Do I need to be enrolled with Tend to use Online Now?
No. Online Now is available to everyone nationwide. You don't need to register with a Tend clinic to use the service. If you'd like cheaper consultation fees, you can enrol with Tend in just a few minutes.
Is Tend a real doctor service?
Yes. Tend clinicians are fully qualified, NZ registered doctors and nurse practitioners. Every Online Now consultation is a secure video call with a real clinician. Tend is not just an online doctor service, we have physical clinics across Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Canterbury you’re welcome to enrol in. 
Can I get a medical certificate from an online doctor?
Yes. Tend's online doctors can issue medical certificates (sick notes) for work or school during your Online Now consultation. If you only need a medical certificate and don't need medication, you can request one on its own for a cheaper fee.
What happens if the online doctor can't help me?
If your condition needs a physical examination or in-person care, the clinician will let you know and can refer you to a Tend clinic, your regular GP or another healthcare provider.
Can I see an online doctor after hours in NZ?
Yes. Tend's Online Now service is available 24/7, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays. After-hours appointments (10pm–8am) and public holiday consultations have a $10 surcharge, except for children under 14 with a CSC who are free at all times.
